Mumsnetters harness the power of the crowd
Abortion Support Network provides financial assistance and accommodation to the thousands of women who travel from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland to England for abortions.
“'Managing thousands of individual donations to five different organisations in just one week is quite a task, and not one Mumsnet would be able to undertake by itself, so JustGiving's expertise and back-up has been really invaluable. Donors and recipients alike seem to find the process smooth and quick, and there's no doubt that JustGiving has contributed significantly to the success of Giving Week.” Justine Roberts, Founder of Mumsnet.
“We were delighted to be chosen as one of the charities to benefit from Mumsnet’s Giving Week. We are a tiny charity meeting a huge need. So far we have helped over 2,000 women but many more need our help as it costs between £400 to £2000 to travel to England and pay privately for an abortion. In both Northern Ireland (despite being part of the UK) and the Republic of Ireland, abortion is illegal in almost every circumstance. It is, however, legal for women to travel abroad for an abortion – if they have the funds.” Mara Clarke, Founder and Director, Abortion Support Network.
As part of Mumsnet’s Giving Week 2015, the charity wanted to raise £2,000 to continue to provide this vital service to women in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. They soon doubled their target to £4,000 when they reached their £2,000 target within the first few days.
The charity set up a Campaigns Page on JustGiving and were able to receive donations from around the world. Having a Campaigns Page meant that people could easily share it on social media and amongst their networks, helping to raise both awareness of Abortion Support Network and raise vital funds- fast.
In just one week, over £10,000 was raised from 232 donations, including the matched giving from Mumsnet – exceeding the charity's £4,000 target by 270%. The money raised will ensure that women in need will be able to have an abortion safely.
